Mango, Avocado, Sapote, and Other Warm-Site Trees
Warm-site trees can be deeply rewarding, but they deserve the best microclimates and realistic expectations.
Reserve the warmest locations
Walls, patios, canopy edges, and protected south-facing areas can make a real difference. Use those spaces for trees that cannot tolerate routine cold exposure.
Do not plant too young
Small mangoes, sapotes, avocados, and similar trees are easier to protect in containers until they have stronger trunks and better root systems.
Balance growth with protection
A tree that grows too large for its protection plan becomes a liability. Prune for structure while the tree is still manageable.
Choose cultivars with purpose
Flavor, disease resistance, growth habit, and bearing season all matter. A known cultivar with good fit is usually better than an unknown seedling in a prime spot.
