Freeze Protection Priority List

Cold protection works best when the priority list is made before the weather alert arrives.

Protect the most tender and valuable plants first

Breadfruit, cacao, sensitive Garcinias, young grafted trees, and high-value collector plants should be staged early. Do not wait until the temperature is already falling.

Move what can be moved

Container-grown Jaboticabas, Eugenias, miracle fruit, small mangoes, and other young tropicals are easier to protect in a garage, porch, greenhouse, or warm wall microclimate.

Use covers correctly

Covers should trap ground heat and avoid crushing foliage. For serious events, combine covers with water barrels, incandescent heat sources where safe, or protected structures.

Write down what happened

After the event, record temperature, duration, leaf burn, dieback, and recovery. These notes are what turn one cold night into better decisions next season.
