Pollination Chart

Know when one tree is enough and when partners help.

Use this chart as a planning starting point, then track what happens in your own garden.

Planning chart

Pollination notes by plant group.

Fruit set depends on variety, weather, maturity, bloom timing, and site conditions. These notes help you decide what to observe.

Plant group Pollination note What to track Practical action
Jaboticaba Many types can fruit alone once mature. Flowering age, fruit set, watering during bloom. Focus on long-term health and moisture consistency.
Eugenia Many are self-fruitful, but fruit quality and set vary. Bloom timing, fruit flavor, seedling versus named type. Keep notes before deciding which plants earn permanent space.
Avocado A/B flower type can matter, but local overlap and weather also matter. Flower type, bloom overlap, cold damage, fruit set. Consider complementary varieties if space allows.
Annona / Atemoya Hand pollination can greatly improve set. Female/male flower timing, pollen collection, successful fruit set. Learn flower timing and hand pollinate when possible.
Mango Often self-fruitful, but cultivar and weather affect production. Bloom timing, disease pressure, fruit set after cold/wet weather. Choose cultivars for flavor, disease resistance, and site fit.
Citrus Many types fruit alone; some mandarins and specialty citrus vary. Bloom timing, fruit set, seediness, micronutrient issues. Prioritize health, feeding, and pest management.
Banana Most edible bananas do not need pollination for fruit. Pup management, flowering stem, time to bunch, cold recovery. Feed, water, thin pups, and protect from wind/cold.
Best record

Flowering date

Track when a tree flowers, whether another variety was blooming, and what the weather was doing that week.

Useful note

Fruit set result

Write down whether flowers dropped, held small fruit, or matured. That tells you more than bloom alone.

Next step

Compare over seasons

One poor year does not prove failure. Repeated notes help separate weather problems from variety or pollination problems.
